Black Bears in Cottage Country

July 7, 2020 by Lea Leave a Comment

BE BEAR AWARE! There has been a marked increase in bear activity in cottage country. Over the years, our bears have become habituated by the steady access at local landfill sites to human food. Foraging for berries is no longer a natural instinct. Most dumps now employ bins, inaccessible to the bear population, and their keen sense of smell leads them to cottages.

It is extremely important that BBQs are kept clean, bird feeders removed, and no food or garbage is left outside or in screened rooms or huts. Residents and visitors alike are here because we value the natural world, but in order to live in harmony with our fellow creatures, we need to understand their habits and take the necessary precautions to protect ourselves and our wildlife.
